Just for fun | Breath of the Wild Companion App

The reasoning

I’ll admit, I didn’t have a solid plan for this initially.

I saw someone on YouTube create an Elden Ring-inspired version and thought, “Why not do that for Zelda? That’d be cute.” So, I followed along and learned a lot in the process.

This was my first dive into mobile design, and honestly, I enjoyed it way more than I expected. Having only done web design before, this was a refreshing change of pace that challenged me to think differently. Turns out, it scratched an itch I didn’t even know I had.

To make things more interesting (or complicated, depending on how you look at it), I designed this for an iPhone 13—even though I use a Galaxy S20-something. But hey, you’ve got to learn somehow, right?

The process

I started with a mood board—which isn’t something I typically do—but without a brand kit or established design library to lean on, I needed a solid starting point.

From there, I jumped into wireframing and creating components, pulling together the elements I liked the most.

Next came the prototype. This part was painstaking—I wanted it to feel polished and not come off as flimsy, and honestly, it drove me a little nuts. Prototyping is one of my favorite parts of the design process, though, so ultimately I learned a lot and had fun.

It’s still not perfect, and maybe I’ll revisit it someday. But I had a great time working on it. It felt good to create something just for fun, and along the way, I got much more comfortable with app design.
